The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to inform that H. E. General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan Abdel Rahman, President of the Sovereignty Council, sent this morning, Saturday January 20, 2024, an official letter to H.E. Mr. Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of the Republic of Djibouti, and Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), communicating the decision of the Government of Sudan to suspend Sudan’s membership in the organization.
This decision came as a result of the organization’s disregard for Sudan’s decision, which was officially conveyed to IGAD, to discontinue its engagement and suspend its dealings with it on any issues concerning the current situation in Sudan. However, an agenda item on the same issue was included in the 42nd Extraordinary Assembly of IGAD Heads of State and Government, held on Thursday, January 18th in Kampala, Republic of Ugandan, that Sudan had boycotted.
Furthermore, the Summit’s Final Communique contained clauses that infringe on Sudan’s sovereignty and injure the feelings of the victims of atrocities committed by the rebel militia and their families.
The letter clarified that the Government of Sudan is, therefore, not obligated by and not concerned with any decisions issued by IGAD on Sudanese affairs.
